Rostock

Rostock operates as gateway to the Baltic Sea with ferry lines to Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. Besides unique coastal scenery, Rostock also offers the advantages of a big city: a historical and impulsive city centre with Hanseatic flair and a seaside resort at the Baltic Sea. Every year barques, brigs and schooners are the main actors of an unique maritime spectacle - Hanse Sail Rostock. Nobody can evade the special romantic charisma of this fantastic rendezvous of windjammers that belongs to the most important maritime festivals of the world. While ashore shanties, a Ferris wheel and fireworks attracts thousands of visitors, traditional sailing ships scramble at the quays for four days and invite to seafaring. During the Warnemünde Week high class sailing with more than 2.000 water sportsmen from all over the world and cultural spectacles ashore are presented every year at the beginning of July. At the end of the year the largest Christmas market in the north conjures a festive glance of lights in Rostock's historical city centre.

"River awakening" kicks off the season in Warnemünde
A long line of market stalls and culinary delights along the Alter Strom and around the lighthouse is a serious draw. The programme includes music and entertainment, the rotation of the historic swing bridge and the traditional first draught of bock beer. Many barrel-organ players will animate the festival.
