King's Road Project

King's road is one of the oldest tourist routes in the Northern Europe. Since the 14th century kings and merchants have been travelling along the King's Road connected Stockholm, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg and other towns located on the shore of the Baltic Sea. The King's Road project is co-financed by the European Union's Tacis program.

King's Road Russia is a marketing project for cultural tourism between King's Road in Southern Finland, city of Stockholm, city of St. Petersburg and its region. This route is demonstrating unique cultural treasures combining the Eastern and Western traditions.

For 70 years Kronshtadt, the unique fortress town, was closed not only for foreign tourists but also for people of Soviet Union. The city was a military base of Baltic Navy fleet. In modern economic situation one of the main objectives for Kronshtadt is development of tourist infrastructure in the town. Participation in the King' Road project is very important step in the town's development and preparation to 300-years jubilee which will be celebrated in 2004. Kronshtadt, built by the decree of Peter the Great in 1704, is only 1 year younger than the Northern Capital City of Russia - Saint-Petersburg.

The historical, cultural and architectural heritage is represented not only by museums such as "The Kronshtadt Fortress" Naval Museum or homemuseum of Orthodox Saint Ioan but also by cathedrals, monuments and unique military fortifications. Tourism is giving a new life to the town. The town of the Naval Glory attracts thousands of Russian visitors. And now a very interesting route for foreign tourists is ready. This route is a part of King's Road.

The working group, which consists of representatives of city administration, International Fund "300 years of Kronshtadt – Holy places be revived" and St. Petersburg Travel Company, was organised in Kronshtadt in July 2001 to create the tourist route. In September Kronshtadt is waiting for inspectors from Finish Tourist board.
