 Singing Island

Estonia is the land of singing and song festivals. The tradition of song festivals on Hiiumaa island begun in 1926. This year's festival was like a cultural trip through Kärdla. Two old ladies who took part in the first song festival of Hiiumaa: Agnes Tarning (91) and Elsa Nurmik (90) were invited, too.

The festival was opened in the Town Park by song festivals' stone. Afterwards choirs gave concerts in church and park. Singers, dancers and other participants made a procession through the town to the Museum of Hiiumaa. In front of the museum the procession became a merry party of joking liked by the inhabitants of Hiiumaa. From the museum the procession went to the beach of Kärdla where folk dancing party began. The flare made up of burning raft in the sea lighted the last dancers in beautiful summer night…
