UBC INTERNAL SUSTAINABILITY GUIDELINES

The Commission on Environment has produced guidelines to help all commissions and networks in their role in making UBC activities and practices more sustainable.

Separated into six sections, the guide lines provide useful information on how to achieve greater sustainability when running meetings/workshops/conferences, producing publications and in an office environment.

All the commissions, networks and the secretariat were asked to complete a questionnaire to gather their thoughts and ideas on how to make the UBC more sustainable and also to see what sustainable practices we already undertake.

The networks and commissions are all different and each one is making positive steps in their own way. Some for example are already recycling paper, using energy efficient light bulbs and we all are making extensive use of e-mail and the Internet.

The guidelines are a good tool to make sure that we all pull together in the same direction to create a more sustainable UBC.

A draft of the guidelines was presented to the 31st UBC board meeting in Marlbork, Poland on the 16th June and was warmly welcomed by the board.

The next step is for the guidelines to be proposed to the General Conference in Rostock as part of the LA21 Action Program 2002 - 2003.
