Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race 2001
An armada of the most beautiful tall ships
in the world will gather in Bergen for eventful days 26th
- 30th of July as a part of the traditional Cutty
Sark Tall Ships' Race 2001. The city of Bergen was a host
for the tall ships also in 1993 and it was a tremendous
success.
This
is one of the greatest international sailing events. The
fascinating sight of more than one hundred tall ships at
bay, 3000 young sailors from all over the world and hundreds
of thousands visitors will create a carnival atmosphere
in the Fjord Capital of Norway.
The harbour area will constitute an exciting
environment with restaurants, live music on stages, competitions,
shows and fireworks. Photographers will have plenty of exciting
photo opportunities, not only the fabulous Parade of Sail
on July 30th when all the ships will sail in
company from the Bergen harbour.
Cutty Sark Tall ships' Races are organised
by the International Sail Training Association (ISTA) and
have been arranged every year since 1956. This year's race
starts in Antwerp in Belgium 4th July, goes to
Alesund and Bergen and finish in Esbjerg in Denmark 7th
August.
Among the tall ships that will come to Bergen
are Sedov and Statsraad Lemkuhl. Sedov is a four-masted
barque and the largest sailing ship in the world. Her overall
length is 117 metres and the sail surface is 4,192 m2.
Bergen is Statsraad Lemkuhl's homeport, and she is Norway's
largest and oldest square-rigged sailing ship. The ship
is also one of the world's oldest sailing ships and we dare
say one of the best preserved.
