ENVCOM AND AGENDA 21
UBC Local Agenda 21 Working Group and
Commission on Environment met in Liepâja, Latvia,
19-20 March 2001. The meeting gathered 31 participants representing
member cities and partner organisations in all Baltic Sea
Region countries, except Norway.
During the two days in Liepaja, basis were
created for the preparations of new UBC Agenda 21 Program,
different project ideas discussed, and new contacts between
members created. In addition to intensive hours in seminar
rooms, the participants also enjoyed the splendid hospitality
of the local organisers, and participated in an interesting
on-site excursion.
During the excursion, e. g., the new Phare-funded
Ground Water Pumping and Iron Removal Station was presented.
Liepâja is the third largest city in Latvia, and the
strategic goal of the city is sustainable development. While
fostering economic development, much is being done in Liepâja
for putting in order the environmental infrastructure and
ensuring safe, healthy living environment.
The next Commission's meeting will be organized
on the occasion of the General Conference, Rostock 12-13
October.
