VI GENERAL CONFERENCE
ROSTOCK, 12-13 OCTOBER 2001

SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

It is a great pleasure for the Hanseatic City of Rostock to host the VI UBC General Conference. Representatives of all UBC member cities are invited to take part in discussing together with EU and non-EU politicians one of the challenging aims of the EU enlargement and the topic of the thematic day of the UBC General Conference: 'Social Justice in the new Millennium'.

After the panel discussions on Friday morning participants will have the possibility to go into further details of the topic in five workshops. Here representatives of the UBC member cities can exchange their local points of view and discuss 'Social Policy', 'Labour Market Policy', 'Participation of Children and Youth', 'Gender Equality', 'Health and Social Equality for Everybody' from the enlargement perspective. The Union of the Baltic Cities will thus continue to contribute to build a peaceful Baltic Sea Region with social security and equality for all its inhabitants. For the first time a resolution, a 'Social Charter for UBC member cities' is possibly adopted during the General Conference's thematic day.

The first day will end with a reception by the Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Rostock and the already traditional 'Best Local Agenda 21 Practices Award Ceremony' in one of the most beautiful locations of the old city the 'House of the Guilds' (Ständehaus).

The second day will start with the meetings of the UBC Commissions and then internal affairs of the UBC will follow, like activity reports, elections, financial matters, etc.

The UBC will present a Conference Resolution for adoption at the end of the day.

Another novelty will be the exhibitions about the activities of the UBC and its Commissions.

One of the highlights of the General Conference will be the Festivity celebrating the 10th anniversary of the UBC in the City Hall on Saturday.

Looking forward to receiving you and to challenging and fruitful communication.
