CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES

Crime prevention is an important public task both for those from the public and voluntary sectors. Individuals, public service departments and organisations all agree that crime is an undesirable phenomenon which both can and should be combated – among other thing through preventive measures. All experiences indicates that this is not a task that can be left solely to one department.

Individual efforts alone is usually not enough. Efforts must be coordinated through a long lasting and comitted cooperation between different sectors, a cooperation based on the knowledge.

In Bergen three public sector bodies – the municipality, the police and the county council – have formalised collaboration on crime prevention measures. The collaboration is based on the CLPM model. CLPM stands for Co-ordination of Local Crime Prevention Measures.

One year after the establishment of CLPM, the City of Bergen can provide experiences related to organisation, coordination and hindrances in this field. Our hope is that this experience will be the first step to create a society where children and youth avoid crime - a society with vital local environments where every human can be safe.
