SUBJECT: Invitation to join the new UBC Task Force on Youth Employment and Well-being
Dear Mayors, Colleagues!
The XII UBC General Conference held in Mariehamn, on 1-4 October 2013, was entitled: “Investing in young people. Combating youth unemployment and marginalization – from words into action”.
The Mariehamn debate included numerous presentations on the situation of youth from European, national and local perspectives. Detailed reports by mayors from UBC member cities highlighted local solutions, complemented by representatives of trade unions and companies. Outcome of the debate could be shortly summed up by saying that “the situation is difficult but not hopeless”. But it was clear for all of us that this was just the beginning of the work.
Therefore, the General Conference adopted the resolution establishing an international Task Force on youth employment and well-being which shall work until the next General Conference (Gdynia, 2015).
The resolution is available at:

Participation on the Task Force is open. Member Cities and Commissions are warmly encouraged to participate in the task force work. UBC will also invite other partners – national authorities, businesses and trade unions, Pan-Baltic organisations and European institutions, civil society organisations and others – to join the work of this Task Force.
I would like your City to join the Task Force and nominate a representative to its work, which will be conducted in English. We would appreciate if you can inform the General Secretariat by 15. December the name and contact details of your nominated person. Mr Matti Mäkelä from Turku, whom the General Conference asked to convene the Task Force, will be in contact with the nominated representatives concerning its work and timing of the first meeting.
UBC programme to promote youth employment and well-being is available at:
