Cross-border cooperation in science communication, Rostock 21-22.03.13

To all members of the Union of the Baltic Cities

Please pass this invitation on to school authorities, schools or teachers active or interested in the field of science education. Thank you!

Dear Sir/Madam,

Due to the effects of demographic change, the competition for qualified employees has become a great issue for our society. The conditions are favourable in the Baltic Sea region which has excellent, traditional institutions for science and education. Nevertheless, stabilising and enhancing the exchange between universities and research institutions, and between schools and school authorities, are challenges which may not be neglected but deserve our special attention.

There are multiple ways for a fruitful exchange between research institutions and schools all over the Baltic Sea region. These endeavours often depend on individual engagement and suffer from financial restraints. To find funding resources is an everlasting challenge for all science-meets-school activists. Already existing cooperation might be of assistance in that connection. Our Baltic Sea region, with its variety of networks, is an asset which far too seldom is recognized on our way to a strengthened region in a globalised world.

We are pleased to invite you to an international workshop, organized by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, which aims to assist institutions in finding partners for international projects and to inspire new approaches in science, communication and education.

We are delighted to be the venue of such a workshop. It reflects in a perfect way our commitment towards the young generation in Rostock, which was recently rewarded the title "City of Young Researchers" in 2013.

Title: Cross-border co-operation in science communication - good practise examples and future perspectives

Date: 21-22 March, 2013

Kind regards,

Roland Methling

Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Rostock
