Meeting of the UBC Commission on Tourism

On 5 May 2003 a working meeting of the Tourist Commission Union of Baltic Cities was held in Koszalin. The moderator was Mr Ryszard Zdrojewski, Chairman of the Tourist Commission and at the same time a director of the Development and Foreign Cooperation Department Municipality of Koszalin.

The meeting was attended by representatives of UBC's member cities as well as tourist organizations from Estonia , Russia , Germany and Poland - 14 people in total.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss Commission's activity program for the period of 2006-2007 as well as present of two international projects scheduled for accomplishment. One of them, named „Fotosuch und Quizfahrt 2006", has been scheduled for this year (for more information please go to: http://www.fotosuch-quizfahrt.de/html/description.html ). The second one, named „ Poland and Scandinavia Knowledge Competition" has been scheduled for the next year and will be presented during Commission's annual meeting in Jurmala. Both projects assume participation of UBC's member cities.

During the meeting the following Commission's plan of operations for 2006 has been adopted:

organisation of the annual meeting during the IVth quarter in Jurmala;
cooperation with other member cities on EU projects pertaining to development of tourism and infrastructure in the Baltic Sea Region cities;
continuation of assumptions of the former EU projects and ideas and initiation of new ones;
building and consolidation of network of people working in tourism;
extension of cooperation between UBC Commissions regarding accomplishment of the goals of the Baltic Sea Region cities (particularly with the Transport Commission, due to similar goals);
helping member cities in more active participation in Commission's work;
supporting actions, ideas and initiatives aimed at development of tourist awareness;
improvement of efficiency of tourism experience exchange (working projects, strategies);
updating of Tourist Commission's Website;
increasing awareness on Commission's work scope (brochures, newsletters).
The following objectives were also discussed and adopted:

integration of the Baltic Sea Region communities through better understanding each other, exchange of tourist information and support of tourist traffic;
better coordination of tourism in the Baltic Sea Region through creation of a cooperation network between the cities, development of interpersonal relationships and use of the Internet;
permanent development of the tourist infrastructure through initiation of projects based on the European Union programmes;
promotion of active and healthy lifestyle in which tourism plays a significant role.
Furthermore, the possibilities of cooperation between the UBC's cities with relation to raising of EU funds for development of cities' tourist facilities, particularly infrastructure, were discussed during the meeting.

An idea of creation of a common project concerning reactivation of local airports has been discussed. Also limitations of tourism development as well as the methods of its creation and promotion in various Baltic Sea area cities were being discussed.

One of the ideas for stimulation of tourism within the region presented by the Association of Communes and Districts of Middle Pomerania with its seat in Koszalin was creation of "theme" bicycle routes in the city and its neighbourhood. This idea attracted interest of those representatives of UBC's member cities, who attended the meeting.

Besides, it's been fixed that exchange of information between the cities associated in the Union of Baltic Cities as well as any further ideas for common operations will be done in electronic way (by e-mail) and the contact person shall be Mr Ryszard Zdrojewski, the Chairman of the Tourist Commission.
