The International Organ Music Festival at the Oliwa Cathedral is the oldest event of its kind in Poland. For almost half a century now, the Oliwa organ has been coming alive with the music of the masters, the sound of both early and contemporary works, with world premieres performed right here. The Cathedral’s organ is an instrument of a unique sound, construction and capability. It consists of a central and side part so the organ player can play both at the same time, from a single keyboard to obtain stereophonic effects. The organ’s Baroque ornamentation is enhanced with moving parts: trumpets, angels’ bells and spinning stars, all put in motion when the music is playing. This annual festival attracts celebrated virtuosos from around the world.
