Turun Urheiluliitto organized the first Paavo Nurmi Games as a birthday gift to its legendary runner, Paavo Nurmi, for his 60th birthday in June 1957. This tradition has gone on ever since and the event has been one of the main events in the Urheilupuisto-Sports Park, The Paavo Nurmi Stadium, in Turku during the summertime.

In 2015, the event is expanding into a festival week with various acitivities, for example for children.
